Family Photos 101:

As a Seattle Photographer I often hear the same question from my families: “What are the most important milestones we should hire a professional photographer for?” It’s a great question - and one that often comes with stories of regret from couples who didn’t think to capture meaningful moments until it was too late. I’ve heard countless times, “I wish we had taken professional photos when the kids were little” or “We didn’t even think about photographing that moment, and now it’s gone.”

That’s why I created this guide - to help you plan for the most meaningful moments in your family’s life. These are the milestones that deserve more than a quick phone snapshot - they deserve to be professionally captured, printed, and displayed proudly in your home. Family photos are more than just pictures; they’re memories you’ll treasure forever, decorating your walls with love and the most precious memories of your family’s journey.

One of the most meaningful ways to document your family’s journey begins even before you say “I do.” Long before wedding bells ring or maternity photos are planned, capturing the early moments of your love story through a “Save the Date” photoshoot is the perfect way to start creating lifelong memories. These sessions aren’t just about the perfect shot - they’re about telling your story as a couple. Starting with polished studio photography offers timeless, elegant portraits, while stepping outside for more relaxed, candid shots can showcase the dynamic of your relationship - whether it’s romantic, sensual, or full of laughter.

The Family Photography Journey

From those first couple shots to your growing family, here’s how to plan and enjoy each special photoshoot along the way:

1. Engagement & Save the Date Photos

This first step into family photos is more than just a formal announcement - it’s a celebration of your unique bond. A great approach is starting in the studio for polished shots, then heading outdoors to capture relaxed moments. Think of this as the first page in your family’s visual storybook.

Tip: Choose locations that are meaningful, perhaps the place where you got engaged, for that extra personal touch.

When to Book: 6-9 months before your wedding.

2. Wedding Photoshoot

Your wedding photoshoot is the ultimate celebration of love. These photos will be cherished for generations, so capturing every meaningful glance and joyful moment is essential.

When to Book: As soon as your wedding date is set.

3. Maternity Photoshoot

Your first family photo with your little one on the way is a magical moment. Maternity photos are best started in the studio, where we can get creative with flowing fabrics, beautiful maternity gowns, and unique lighting.

Tip: If weather permits, add some outdoor photos at a special location - maybe even the same spot as your engagement shoot - to tie the journey together.

When to Book: Beginning of your Second Trimester. Ask your photographer for Maternity plus Newborn package if you want a deal.

4. Newborn Photoshoot

Welcoming your baby into the world calls for a cozy and safe newborn photoshoot. Studio sessions ensure we have everything on hand - soft wraps, props, and the perfect lighting - for those adorable, snuggly shots.

Tip: Can’t decide between in-studio or at-home? Why not both! Lifestyle photos at home beautifully capture everyday moments, while studio shots bring a polished touch.

When to Book: Your Second Trimester

5. Sitter Session (6-9 months)

Once your baby can sit up on their own, it’s time for the sitter session — perfect for capturing chubby cheeks, toothless smiles, and tons of personality. Babies at this stage are playful and curious, without the “stranger danger” that can appear later on.

When to Book: A lot of photographers offer deals on First Year photoshoots, you can take advantage of this by booking with Newborn session.

6. First Birthday & Cake Smash

A first birthday photoshoot is a must! A classic cake smash session is always a hit — think messy, giggly, and full of personality. We’ll also take some timeless family photos during the session to mark the occasion.

When to Book: One or two months before your baby's birthday. A lot of photographers offer deals on First Year photoshoots, you can take advantage of this by booking with Newborn session.

7. Annual Family Photos

Children grow and change so fast - especially in the early years. Taking family pictures yearly helps capture every little change.

Here’s a suggested timeline:

• 2 Years Old: Local park sessions work great, letting toddlers run and play without long car rides.

• 3 Years Old: A beach session where toddlers can throw rocks into the water - endless entertainment and perfect candid moments.

• 4 Years and Older: Kids are more patient, so you can explore either a studio shoot or venture out to scenic spots.

8. Best Locations for Family Photos around Seattle

As your family grows, why not mix up the locations? Here are a few ideas for where to take a family photo that’s both fun and meaningful:

• Sunflower Fields

• Cherry Blossom in Washington Park Arboretum, University of Washington or Lake Sammamish State Park

• Lavender Farms

• Mountain Views at Olympic or Mount Rainier National Parks

• Beach Days on the Puget Sound

• Fall Shoots at Discovery Park, Washington Park Arboretum, or Kubota Garden

These spots not only make for stunning backdrops but also help document the passing seasons alongside your family’s growth.

The Importance of Family Photos

From your first family photoshoot to annual portraits, every session captures a unique stage of life. Whether it’s the sleepy newborn stage, the giggles of a cake smash, or the proud moments of a growing family, these photos tell your story.

And the best part? We can revisit favorite locations over the years, documenting your family’s journey in the same spot - watching your little ones grow up right before the camera.

Ready to start planning your next family photoshoot? Whether you’re thinking about your engagement photos, your baby’s first birthday, or simply capturing the everyday magic of your family, I’d love to help you create memories that last a lifetime.
