How to prepare for a Newborn photo session

Hello to all the wonderful Seattle area families and soon-to-be-parents, preparing for their newborn photoshoots! Here’s a detailed guide from Yulia Ordaz - a professional Newborn photographer in Seattle with more then 7 years of experience, to ensure everything goes smoothly on your session day:

  1. Scheduling Your Session: Newborn sessions are typically scheduled in the morning, either at 8 or 9am for babies under 3 weeks old, and slightly later for older babies to accommodate their sleep schedules. Afternoon and early evening sessions are avoided for baby’s comfort.
  2. Post-Birth Notification: Please contact us within 24-48 hours of your baby’s birth to confirm details like birth weight and any complications or special circumstances.
  3. Session Timing: Most newborns are scheduled between 8-14 days after birth, adjusting based on baby’s weight and development. A newborn is considered so for 6 weeks. As a newborn progresses in development their bones harden and they tend to “uncurl” and stretch out more. A newborn photo session can successfully be achieved at any of these weeks with special care and prep.We never turned away babies for their age, however certain poses may not be possible as they get older.
  4. Session Day Prep: We recommend feeding your baby right before the session begins. Newborn sessions typically last about 2 hours, and since babies usually eat every 2-3 hours, a feeding just before the session can help ensure a smooth and uninterrupted experience. However, babies can sometimes experience growth spurts, causing them to feed more frequently during the session. If your baby still seems hungry after being fed, we will pause for a feeding break to make sure they are comfortable. We suggest sticking to your baby’s normal early morning feeding schedule, which is often about 3 hours before your session. You’re welcome to let your baby go back to sleep afterward – there’s no need to keep them awake. When you arrive, we’ll gently undress your baby down to their diaper and give you time to feed them again, ensuring they’re awake and ready for the session.
  5. Feeding Approach: We support baby-led sessions, meaning we follow your baby’s cues for feeding during the shoot. Whether breastfed or bottle-fed, stick to your usual routine. Moms who need to pump are also welcome to do so during the session if needed.
  6. Special Services: If interested, hair and makeup services can be arranged at the start of the session. Payment and details are coordinated separately.
  7. Inspiration Sharing: Share your favorite images with us from our website, Pinterest, or Instagram to guide the style and mood of your session.
  8. Newborn Packing List: Pack loose pajamas for baby, a pacifier (even if not regularly used), spare diapers, a blanket, any keepsakes you’d like featured, and extra bottles if bottle-fed.
  9. Relax and Enjoy: Your energy sets the tone for baby’s comfort during the session. Stay relaxed and comfortable, and we’ll capture those priceless moments beautifully.

Preparing for your newborn’s first photoshoot should be a joyous experience. With these tips, you’re all set to create lasting memories of this precious time. We look forward to capturing your baby’s unique charm and sweetness!
